East Rand Palliative Care Launches New Support Group.

Grief comes in many forms—sometimes it follows the loss of a loved one, and sometimes it’s the quiet sadness of losing the life you once knew. Recognising this, East Rand Palliative Care (formerly Hospice East Rand) has introduced Healing Together Through Loss, a new monthly support group designed to help individuals process grief in all its shapes.

Whether you’re facing life after illness, adjusting to the changing role of a loved one’s diagnosis, or mourning someone close to you, this group provides a safe space to talk, reflect, and begin to heal.

“Our goal is to offer a sense of belonging during one of the most isolating experiences a person can go through,” says Busisiwe Ntondini, one of East Rand Palliative Care’s social workers. “Grief is not something to fix. It’s something to move through—and nobody should have to do that alone.”

Abegail Els, another social worker at East Rand Palliative Care who will co-facilitate the group, agrees. “We’ve seen how meaningful it is when people feel heard and understood. These sessions aren’t just about talking. They’re about connecting.”

The first session will take place on Saturday, 28 June 2025, from 10:00 to 12:00, and will continue monthly on the last Saturday of every month. Each session costs R150, which includes tea or coffee and a muffin or biscuits on arrival.

If you or someone you know is navigating grief, this gentle and supportive space may be the place to start.
